What is the Functional Movement Screen (FMS)?

The Functional Movement Screen is a tool used to evaluate seven fundamental movement patterns in individuals with no current pain complaint or musculoskeletal injury. The FMS is not intended to diagnose orthopedic problems but rather to demonstrate opportunities for improved movement in individuals. The screen is designed to place an individual in extreme positions where movement deficits become noticeable if appropriate stability and mobility are not used. Even though individuals may seem to be functioning normally, it has been observed that many of these same individuals are limited in fundamental movement. This leads to the use of compensatory movements in order to achieve or maintain the ability needed for various activities. The inefficient use of compensation during movement will lead to poor biomechanics that are limiting and reduces the body’s ability to move efficiently—and may cause future injury. Screenings are followed up with individualized corrective exercise strategies to allow for ease of movement and function.

TESTIMONIALS

I have worked with Estelle for many years in her studio. I am now a happy client in her on-line training program!
It is tailored to fit my needs, and a real plus that I can workout on my schedule. I love that the program changes every 2 weeks. Estelle is very knowledgeable in the area of bone strength and osteoporosis and I value her experience and am grateful to know I am doing what I can to stay active.

My comfort and flexibility have actually INCREASED in the last five years as I’ve worked with Estelle and simultaneously aged. That painful shoulder has disappeared. I’m happily doing squats with knees I’ve avoided bending before. My body is stronger, tighter, and more flexible...and I’m five years older! And after decades of decreasing bone density, it actually increased this year. Kudos to Estelle - she is a body magician!
